The Middlesex town of Hayes first organised races on Friday 18th March 1836 on a course situated between Ickenham and Eastcote. The principal event was the Cockedge Cup, which saw Captain Cannon’s Peacock get the better of Miss Blake. Meetings continued for the next ten years until a final card on Tuesday 22nd December 1846. The 2 mile course started at a meadow below Pole Hill, owned by Mr Shackle, and proceeded through two meadows owned by Mr Meekins and Mr Scaffold before turning back to the winning post on Pole Hill. The opening Sweepstakes went to The Doctor, owned by Mr Saint, while the concluding Hayes Cup saw Docility claim the cup for Mr Clayton over The Parson. |
